ST. LOUIS (AP) _ A federal judge has issued an injunction
prohibiting the city of St. Louis from charging more than $50 for
individual street performers, or $100 for groups of street
performers.

The injunction on Tuesday was in response to a lawsuit filed by
the American Civil Liberties Union on behalf of two performers. The
suit claimed a city ordinance is unconstitutional because it
requires an audition and license to perform on the street.

The city has agreed to U.S. District Judge Catherine Perry's
order.

The ordinance charges $100 per year for each performer. The ACLU
says most cities don't require a permit and those that do charge
far less than St. Louis. ACLU attorney Tony Rothert says he is not
familiar with any other city that requires an audition.
