Macoupin County Says No to Sales Tax

Tuesday‘s consolidated election in Macoupin County produced a 33 percent voter turn out.

A county wide public safety tax proposition was defeated by a large margin.Vote totals showed 6942 voters voted against the measure and 3006 were in favor. The other county wide proposition was non-binding and asked voters there opinoin on the conceal and carry firearms isssue. Voters in favor of the conceal and carry numbered 7,604 and those voting no numbered 2,469.

Voters in the city of Carlinville approved a 1 percent sales tax increase. Yes votes number 783 and no votes were 660.

Voters in Gillespie said no to the city energy proposition and Nilwood Township voters said no to the proposed tax increase in that township.

Vote totals are unofficial until April 30th when the canvassing of votes will be completed.
