An Owaneco man is in critical condition following a single-vehicle accident in Taylorville on Sunday, Jan. 12.
Christian County Sheriff's Deputies responded to the crash at 2:25 a.m. on 1300 East Road. According to Sheriff Bruce Kettelkamp, a pickup was southbound when it went off the roadway on the east side near 1250 North Road. He said the vehicle rolled over on its top and came to rest in flooded water just off the roadway.
Located inside were Taylorville residents Stefan Bedinger, 32, and Curtis Eller, 29, and Owaneco resident Eric Burke, 40. All three were taken to Taylorville Memorial Hospital before being transferred to Springfield Memorial. Sheriff Kettelkamp said Burke was later transferred to a hospital in St. Louis in critical condition. Bedinger and Eller were both released from Springfield.
Investigators say road conditions were snow covered and icy at the time of the incident. Additionally, Kettelkamp said it appears alcohol may have been a factor in the crash, and that the investigation is ongoing. He added that the driver of the vehicle has not been determined at this time. So far, the investigation has revealed that all three had been to the Funky Monkey Tavern and were heading to Bedinger's residence at the time of the crash.
The Sheriff said the three individuals were fortunate not to have drowned. He encourages citizens to avoid driving in hazardous conditions when unnecessary, and reminds everyone to make sure they have a sober driver.
