Livingston Woman Dies from Injuries Suffered in Accident

A Livingston woman has died from injuries she suffered in a ten-vehicle accident on Interstate 55 Friday afternoon.

Pauline McKinney, 62, died Monday at 6:34 p.m. She had been airlifted from the scene of the crash to St. Louis University Hospital. Two other motorists were also airlifted from the scene to St. Louis area hospitals, and their conditions are listed as serious at this time.

According to the State Police, a 53-year old Lewistown man was driving a semi north near Edwardsville when he briefly took his eyes off the road to retrieve a bottle of tea, causing his truck to strike the rear of a passenger vehicle slowed by construction. The collision caused a chain reaction involving eight additional vehicles.

In addition to the three people that were airlifted to hospitals, seven other passengers were taken to local hospitals with non-life threatening injuries.

The accident remains under investigation by the state police. It was the second accident in as many days and third in less than a month happening on the Interstate between mileposts 23 and 33.
