America at 250

The Declaration of Independence

The Macoupin County Historical Society is hosting the first in a series of local
celebrations and; activities on May 23, 2026, 11:00 a.m. at the Spring festival highlighting
the 250 th Anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.
Please plan to join us and choose one or two representatives from your club, school or church to help read aloud the Declaration of Independence at the festival. An easy to read copy of the Declaration is provided with this invitation.
Following the reading, participants and the public will be encouraged to have a
conversation about what’s important to them, America, the past and our future.
You may also enter your wish for America and sign the America @ 250 Macoupin
County Time Capsule book. The book will become a permanent archive of the
Macoupin County Historical Society. The general public is invited to listen and
participate in a casual facilitated discussion to follow.

The second opportunity of the day: Be a part of a live recording:
Individuals, families, & friends can be a part of the recording of all 102 Illinois Counties residents telling their stories of family, community, Illinois & their hopes for America,
The recordings will take place at the Illinois Voices 250 tent throughout the day on
Saturday, May 23 rd at the MCHS festival. The recordings will become part of the digital permanent collection at the Library of Congress.
