An 87-year-old Springfield man crashed into the grounds of the Executive Mansion on Friday, May 17, after inadvertently pressing the accelerator.

According to a preliminary investigation by the Illinois State Police, Nils Thunman was exiting the Executive Mansion grounds near the Fourth Street Gate when he inadvertently pressed the accelerator and struck the west side wall of the grounds.

The incident occurred at 8:23 p.m. Thunman did not sustain any injuries during the crash. Additionally, no citations were issued.
