Litchfield Fire Dept. To Flush Hydrants June 10

The Litchfield Fire Department will begin flushing hydrants on Monday, June 10, according to Fire Chief Joe Holomy.

The department will begin flushing in the northeast section of town and then continue west until complete. After that, Holomy says the same process will be followed on the south end.

Hydrants are flushed for many reasons, Holomy says, including to check that each one is working properly and that no caps are frozen shut. According to the chief, valves that should be open are sometimes closed. Each hydrant will also be lubricated during the inspection with a food grade lubricant. Holomy says this ensures the hydrants will open and close when needed. Additionally, flow pressure will be monitored and recorded.

Once the process begins, hydrants will be flushed Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. and on Friday from 8 a.m. to noon. The procedure may cause water to become cloudy, but Holomy says it is still safe to consume.

Anyone who has questions is encouraged to contact the Litchfield Fire Department at 217-324-8171.
