St. Francis Hospital Offers Tips for Staying Cool

HSHS St. Francis Hospital in Litchfield is offering tips for staying cool, as well as how to know the warning signs of heat-related illnesses.

Heat stroke is considered a medical emergency, and if someone is exhibiting the symptoms, 911 should be called immediately.

Heat stroke symptoms include a body temperature of 103 degrees or higher; hot, red, dry or damp skin; a fast, strong pulse; headache; dizziness; nausea; confusion and a loss of consciousness.

After calling 911, a person showing symptoms should be moved to a cooler place. The person's temperature may also be lowered with cool cloths or a cool bath. It is not recommended that the person be given anything to drink.

Certain people are at higher risk for heat-related illnesses. They include infants and young children, people 65 years of age and older, people who are overweight, and those who are physically ill.

Heat-related illnesses are preventable. It is recommended that people stay cool and hydrated. This can be done by wearing appropriate clothing, not being outside if one doesn't have to be, wearing sunscreen, avoiding hot and heavy meals, drinking more fluids and staying away from very sugary or alcoholic drinks.
