Two Charged in Woodburn Man's Death

Charges were filed on Monday against a pair of Madison County residents for their alleged roles in the 2015 death of a Woodburn resident.

Macoupin County State's Attorney Jennifer Watson announced Chancey Y. Hutson of Granite City and William D. Kavanaugh of Edwardsville are both charged with First Degree Murder, Home Invasion, Aggravated Battery and Residential Burlgary for their roles in the incident that resulted in the death of Cody Adams. He was 34.

It has been a long time coming," Watson said in statement announcing the formal charges. "Finally today those responsible have been charged. Several officers have worked on this case seeking the accused and evidence to convict. I appreciate their hard work and dedication in the interest of justice.

On January 1, 2015, Hutson, 28, and Kavanaugh, 34, allegedly traveled to Adams' home on Edwardsville Street. Investigators said the two were intent on committing a theft while knowing Adams was home. The victim was in a struggle with the subjects when a single shot was fired from a handgun. Adams was hit in the upper arm and chest and died shortly after. Hutson and Kavanaugh then allegedly fled the scene.

"I hope the family can find some comfort in the fact that those responsible have been charged with Cody's death," Watson said.
