Shelbyville Man Allegedly Kills Pregnant Girlfriend

A Shelbyville man is facing first degree murder charges after allegedly killing his pregnant girlfriend on Monday, July 8.

Deven A. Barger was arraigned on Wednesday, July 10, on charges of First Degree Murder and Intentional Homicide of an Unborn Child. The 24-year-old is accused of shooting and killing Samantha Cushing, 22, at a home on Will Street in Shelbyville.

After the alleged homicide on Monday, Effingham Police attempted to arrest Barger, but he fled and led police on a chase spanning multiple counties. The pursuit ended in Christian County, where the suspect was safely taken into custody.

Barger is being held by the Illinois Department of Corrections with bond set at $5 million. The incident is still under investigation.

Funeral arrangements for Cushing are being handled by the McCracken-Dean Funeral Home in Pana.
