Authorities Investigating An Apparent Suicide Near Coffeen

(Coffeen)--Authorities are investigating an apparent suicide Wednesday afternoon near Coffen Lake. According to the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office, a call was received around noon about a person that was believed to be dead.

Upon arrivial, the body of 62 year old Brooks Moreland was located. He was pronounced dead at the scene by Montgomery County Coroner Rick Broaddus. An investigation revealed that Moreland died from a self inflicted gun shot wound.

An investigation is ongoing by the Montgomery County Sheriff's and Coroner's Office.

"Operation Smoke Out" In Montgomery County

(Hillsboro)--Local law enforcement agencies, the South Central Illinois Drug Task Force, Montgomery County State's Attorneys Office, and the Attorney General's Office conducted "Operation Smoke Out" over the weekend in Montgomery County. The intent of the sting was to get synthetic drugs out from local stores.

According to the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office, the investigation led to a distributor in Jerseyville, where over one hundred thousand dollars worth of synthetic cannabis was seized.

The products were taken to District 18 headquarters, where they will be destroyed in a controlled burn.

Voter turnout in Macoupin County was 28% for Tuesday's primary election with 8,624 ballots cast.

Litchfield Board of Education Makes Several Cuts

(Litchfield)--The Litchfield Board of Education made several cuts during their meeting Tuesday evening.

Program Cuts

Following an over two hour closed session, the board approved to cut the following high school programs: boys soccer, freshman basketball, boys and girls golf, cross country, girls softball, speech team, and the dance team. The board also approved to cut the following middle school programs: cheerleading, football, volleyball, and wrestling.

Other Cuts

The Litchfield Board of Education also approved to eliminate the Districts Food Service Director position effective on September 1st. The Board also approved to eliminate the position of District Building and Grounds Coordinator effective on July 1st. The Board of Education also approved not to rehire fourteen propationary tecahers, and three extra duties positions effective for the 2012-2013 school year.

Reassignments

The Board of Education also approved to reassign Elementary School Princiapal Susan Bennett as a classroom teacher effective during the 2012-2013 school year.

Administrator Assignments

The Litchfield Board of Education also approved District Administrators for the 2012-2013 school year. They include: Mark Hunt as District Director of Student Services; Adam Favre as Principal of Sihler School and Madison Park Elementary; Andrea Lee as Principal of JD Colt Middle School and Russell Elementary; Jennifer Thompson as Principal at Litchfield Middle School; and DeAnn Heck as Principal at Litchfield High School.

Escaped Detainees In Bond County Captured

(Greenville)--Authorities say they have captured the last three men who escaped from the Bond County Jail. The Bond County Sheriff's Department says James Hickman and Joshua Frith were caught in Indiana after the jailbreak Thursday morning in Greenville. Authorities later found Brian Wilt in Carbondale.

Details of the escape were not released. Wilt was being held on forgery charges. Frith is being held on drug charges; and Hickman on sexual abuse charges.

Illinois State Police and the U.S. Marshals Service are investigating the incident.

Sorento Man Killed In A Motorcycle Accident

(Sorento)--A 62 year old Sorento man was killed in a motorcycle accident Thursday evening in Madison County. According to State Police, a motorcycle driven by Daniel Steward was eastbound on Interstate 270 when he went off the road, striking the median cables.

Steward's 2008 Harley Davidson overturned, ejecting Steward. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
